The author engages with multiple levels of issues related to democracy, governance, resource conflicts, and rights. Amongst others, he was part of the National Front for Tribal Self Rule in the early 1990s which resulted in the enactment of the Provisions of the Panchayat (Extension to the Scheduled Areas) Act in 1996, the first law centred on people's power through participatory democracy at the habitation level Gram Sabha now applicable to the Fifth Schedule areas in 10 States, and the Campaign for Survival and Dignity in the early 2000s, a national coalition of about 150 forest dwellers mass organisations, almost all Adivasis, that resulted in the Forest Rights Act in 1996. In Kerala, he was part of the Adivasi-Dalit Samsara Samithy in the Kudil Ketti Samaram, and associated with Plachimada Samara Samithy and Adivasi Gothra Mahasabha.
